Monthly Musings

Click for an insight into Entrust
Good afternoon!

Welcome to the August edition of our Monthly Musings straight to your inbox.

In this edition we will:
  • provide some observations on the market movements for August,
  • release Episode 12 of our short video series 3 Minute Tech. This episode is the second part of a three part segment on Estate Planning, where we discuss "Enduring Powers of Attorney",
  • look at the subject of share buy-backs. On the back of a strong rebound in profits, some of Australia’s biggest companies are in the midst of large share buy-backs. For investors, making the decision to participate in these buy-backs comes down to many factors, some of which we unpack within our Focal Point section.
  • feature one of our team members being Private Wealth Adviser, Phil George, and,
  • suggest a good podcast to listen to and a good book to read.
We hope you enjoy.

Markets update as at the end of August

Observations from August.....

Australian shares rose 2.5% across August and marked 11 straight months of gains. Technology was clearly the best performing sector as Square Inc. announced a takeover of Afterpay Limited. A substantial drop in the iron ore price led to falls in the mining sector.

Overall, the local reporting season saw mixed results, with positive news emerging on the dividend front.

In the US, investors pushed markets to new records as Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell reiterated that a decision to taper asset purchases won’t mean it will be raising interest rates at the same time. To support the US’s economic recovery from the pandemic, the Federal Reserve has embarked on purchases of US$120bn per month. Spectators will be keenly watching how the economy continues to evolve over coming months.

Focal Point

On the back of a strong rebound in profits, some of Australia’s biggest companies are in the midst of large share buy-backs. With buy-backs, the company can purchase the shares on the market or from shareholders directly (‘off-market’). For investors, making the decision to participate in these buy-backs comes down to many factors, some of which we unpack within Focal Point.

Book suggestion for the month

Liar’s Poker by Michael Lewis

The time was the 1980s. The place was Wall Street. The game was called Liar’s Poker.Michael Lewis was fresh out of Princeton and the London School of Economics when he landed a job at Salomon Brothers, one of Wall Street’s premier investment firms. During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush.

That completes this month's edition of Monthly Musings. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Until next month,

Kind regards from all the team at Entrust
