Monthly Musings

Click to view: An insight into Entrust

Good afternoon!

Here is our Monthly Musings for February.

We hope you enjoy.

Markets Update

Observations from February.....

Whilst the month of February was again positive for most growth assets, of much greater significance to investment markets generally was a very sharp ‘back up’ in the yield on US (and Australian) 10 year treasuries.

This selling in bonds has been driven by higher economic growth expectations on the back of improving COVID case rates, positive vaccine developments and the anticipation of large fiscal support packages.

A steepening yield curve points to economic growth and is therefore positive for investment markets but the sharp move in February has sparked a rotation away from the high growth sectors in the market (think big tech) that are valued on a long runway of earnings growth, into value stocks, commodities and cyclicals that might benefit from higher industrial production.

Inevitably markets have one eye on inflationary pressures that may or may not eventuate and this has driven a lift in volatility.

Below is a chart on the yield of a 10 year US Treasury Note

Focal Point

The Transfer Balance Cap (TBC) began on 1 July 2017 and represents a lifetime limit on the total amount of superannuation that can be transferred into retirement phase income streams. The $1.6 million general TBC will become $1.7 million from 1 July 2021. Once this occurs, there won’t be a single ‘cap’ that applies to all individuals.

In this month’s Focal Point we outline some of the implications of the upcoming changes.

Book suggestion for the month

The Resilience Project, Finding Happiness through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness

Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness.

That completes this February edition of Monthly Musings.

Until next month,

Kind regards from all the team at Entrust
