Markets as at the end of December

As at the 31 December 2021

Observations from December.....

Christmas came late for equity markets in Australia and globally. Both staged strong rallies in the dying days of December to close in on record highs.

The ASX 200 Accumulation Index added over 17% for the year and the S&P 500, posting no less than 70 ‘record high closes’ pushed out a return of almost 27% for calendar year 2021.

Quite a remarkable result given the challenges of stop-start economic activity, congestion in global supply chains, COVID variants driving eye watering infection numbers and a clear shift in rhetoric around the future trajectory of interest rates.

Drilling down on the month of December, energy stocks took a pause but have made a cracking start to the new year, whilst a constructive bounce in commodities including iron ore drove the material sector higher by 10%. Food and staples continued to battle supply headwinds but stronger earnings and a chase for yield drove the banking sector higher by over 5% for the month, closely followed by telecoms and utilities that were oversold in the first half of the quarter.

Focal Point

Estate planning is the process of detailing who will receive your assets and handle your responsibilities upon death or incapacitation. Not having a proper plan can end in unwanted outcomes and disputes.

With Australians set to pass on record amounts of wealth over the coming decades, we highlight what is typically involved in conducting an estate planning process.

Book suggestion for the month

Atomic Habits
James Clear

People think when you want to change your life, you need to think big. But world-renowned habits expert James Clear has discovered another way. He knows that real change comes from the compound effect of hundreds of small decisions – doing two push-ups a day, waking up five minutes early, or holding a single short phone call. He calls them atomic habits.

In this ground-breaking book, Clear reveals exactly how these minuscule changes can grow into such life-altering outcomes. He uncovers a handful of simple life hacks (the forgotten art of Habit Stacking, the unexpected power of the Two Minute Rule, or the trick to entering the Goldilocks Zone), and delves into cutting-edge psychology and neuroscience to explain why they matter. Along the way, he tells inspiring stories of Olympic gold medalists, leading CEOs, and distinguished scientists who have used the science of tiny habits to stay productive, motivated, and happy. These small changes will have a revolutionary effect on your career, your relationships, and your life.

That completes this month's edition of Monthly Musings. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Until next month,

Kind regards from all the team at Entrust
