Markets as at the end of March

As at the 31 March 2022

Observations from March.....

Driven by a flow of capital back into beaten up technology stocks, charging commodity prices and a flight to the relative safety of banks, the ASX 200 added almost 7% in May, significantly outperforming global stocks.

Reversing a disappointing January and February, technology was an obvious place for investors to hunt with the sector ending the month as the best performer.

Energy prices helped oil stocks put on another 10% for the month, matching gains for resources stocks and the Australian banks that both saw earning upgrades and potentially received capital from overseas investors that were looking to mitigate risks around higher commodity prices and geopolitics.

Higher bond yields held a foot on property stocks that were up just 1.5% for the month.

Focal Point - Federal Budget 2022-2023
