Monthly Musings

Click to view the new Episode 4 "Is Super still Super?

Good afternoon! November is complete and to keep you up to date we deliver to your inbox our regular Monthly Musings where we ponder over what happened during the month and provide some worthwhile wealth management updates and information.

We are on the home stretch to Xmas and unbelievably, the end of 2020 is upon us. The headlines for the month past included the RBA's decision to take the cash rate to a new record low of 0.1%, vaccine solutions for the COVID-19 pandemic and the US election results. This created a tailwind for equity markets in November to produce what was a particularly strong month of performance. The price of oil also rallied strongly on the back of the hope that a vaccine will fast track an economic recovery.

Globally, challenges still prevail however. Namely, rising COVID-19 hospitalisations in the US, continuing Brexit negotiations and China/Australia relations becoming strained are all weighing in on their respective regions.

We hope you enjoy the read.

Markets Update

Observations from November....
  • Locally and on the same day that a daring Twilight Payment lead from start to finish in the Melbourne Cup, investors also cheered the RBA’s decision to drop rates to 0.10% and to stand in the market for $100M worth of government bonds.

  • Early in the first week of November, Pfizer-BioNtech announced that their vaccine candidate was 90% effective against COVID-19. This was well ahead of even optimistic market expectations and drove a strong rally in global equity markets. Perhaps more interesting was the ensuing violent rotation away from the ‘lock-down’ technology stocks (Amazon, Netflix etc.) and back into beaten up sectors like transport, restaurants, oil and pockets of value like banks.

The good news kept coming with increased certainty around the outcome the US elections and further positive vaccine news from Oxford Uni – Astrazeneca and Moderna.
