Monthly Musings

Click: Are there options in this low interest rate environment?

Good afternoon! and welcome to this month's edition of "Monthly Musings" where we reflect on the month just past.

With the RBA meeting tomorrow, at the front of "savers" minds continues to be the dilemma of very low interest rates. Senior Investment Adviser Brad Gordon looked at this topic of Interest Rates, Term Deposits and what are the possible alternatives. His insights are contained in the video above.

With the US Election campaign in full swing, global virus concerns ongoing and investors somewhat uncertain, markets were mixed in October.

In this edition highlights include:
  • our market movement overview
  • the launch of Episode 3 of 3 Minute Tech which, like the previous 2 episodes, focuses on the very important topics of superannuation and estate planning. These short videos have been very well received.
  • Focal Point where we explore the legal documents which may allow effective decisions to be made with respect to health and medical treatment.
  • our Entrust team feature, which this month features Senior Investment Adviser and Director, Duncan MacKintosh, and
  • a good book to read and podcast to listen to.

We hope you enjoy.

Markets Update

Observations from October....
  • International equity markets endured a rollercoaster ride in October in a month that was steadily tracking higher until the US election noise and an increase in COVID-19 cases overwhelmed, leading to a broad sell off for the western world’s equities. Europe suffered immensely with Germany down 9.4% whilst it was business as usual for Asia with notable moves from Indonesia +5.3% and India +4.1%.
  • Natural gas spiked 33% as treacherous weather conditions in the Gulf of Mexico was poorly timed for the seasonally strong LNG demand the Northern hemisphere often experiences heading into winter. China have also recently introduced policies to tackle carbon emissions that appear widely supportive for natural gas demand akin to the short-term drivers.

Focal Point

Decisions are part of every day life. But what happens if we cannot make decisions for ourselves due to illness or accident? Although an Enduring Power of Attorney can be used to manage financial and property assets, this does not extend to health and medical treatment.

In this month's "Focal Point" we explore additional legal documents which may allow effective decisions to be made while we are alive.
