Monthly Musings

Click to view: An insight into Entrust

Good afternoon and all the very best for 2021!

Completing 2020, here is our musings for the month of December. In this edition we provide an update on the performance across markets, release the new episode 5 of "3 Minute Tech" and deliver an insightful review relating to temporary changes of minimum pension drawdown rates. We also provide some insight into one of our fantastic team members and a podcast and book suggestion should you have run out of options through the Christmas and New Year period.

We hope you enjoy.

Markets Update

Observations from December.....
  • The month of December saw a flurry of developments and rollouts of COVID-19 vaccinations throughout the world.
  • Thanks to a record amount of support from the Reserve Bank and Federal and state governments, the Australian accumulation indices (ASX 200 and All Ordinaries) ended a chaotic year with a small gain. While the market volatility and subsequent recovery grabbed the headlines, the Australian dollar recorded a substantial annual increase in the face of multiple rate cuts by the Reserve Bank.
  • In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and broader S&P 500 index ended 2020 at all-time highs. The Nasdaq Composite ended the year just shy of its record high recorded earlier in the month. All three benchmarks ended the year with gains for a second year in a row.
  • London’s leading share index, the FTSE 100, clocked up its worst year since the 2008 financial crisis. The slump can be attributed to uncertainties and disruptions caused by the coronavirus and Brexit. The post-Brexit trade deal has now been written into law in the UK.

Focal Point

As part of regulation changes announced by the Government during the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, minimum pension drawdown rates were halved for the current financial year. This offers additional flexibility for retirees managing their income strategy.

In this month’s “Focal Point” we highlight some of the considerations surrounding the temporary changes.
